what is your problem with that, katrina? >> let's have a chatty script, interactive, not robotic script. i respect the idea of going door-to-door. i respect the feedback. here is a radical idea. keep those field offices in those towns and communities after the election. you want a real feedback -- >> it does not translate into policy. >> there is a difference. i think you said this during the break, chris. there's a difference between marketing and democracy. that line is getting blurred. we need to watch out for that. i respect the door-to-door, the volunteers. i want the feedback loops to go back. the first step is voting on election day and what follows is building out of politics. >> let's disaggregate the two questions. there's a question about the effectiveness of winning elections. there's not a lot of question about it to the extent you believe in controlled experiments and so forth. i'm looking at you guys over there. but, then there's a broader kind of moral political theoretical question about democratic theory, w

i remember in my state of massachusetts when katrina hit, and some of the people who were evacuated from new orleans were brought to massachusetts, we gathered them at a military base on cape cod and they thought they were going to houston, by the way. and when the plane said no, we're going to boston, they weren't all real happy because it's a little colder in boston. they came to cape cod and we told our citizens we've got people coming here from new orleans who have been affected by the hurricane if you would like to help by providing some supplies and goods they might need, come bring them to cape cod. you know what, there were cars lined up, people dropping all sorts of goods of all kinds, some things that were temporary like food but others that were permanent like tv sets and clothes. it was amazing to see the turnout. it's part of the american way. we've got people right now that are having some hard times because of this terrible hurricane and the storm that followed it and your generosity will make a difference. i want to thank you. we've got some work to do, but to make this a

erwin redlenner, he has studied how hospitals handled katrina. he knows everything, really, about disaster preparedness. and doctor, i have to ask you this. we've seen a lot of businesses, big businesses like goldman sachs, big buildings downtown on generator power. they're up and running. why not a hospital? >> well, it's not clear why not a hospital. and one of the problems here is initially, years ago, we had generators in the basements of hospitals, which is obviously something that doesn't really work, because when they get flooded, the generators go out. so they moved the generators up to higher elevations, but leave the fuel pumps down in the basement. and those fuel pumps are susceptible to flooding. it's just a detail that turns the out to be extraordinarily important when the time comes to actually use those generators. >> seems like a crucial detail right now. the president of new york city is helping the hospital corporation, asked by cnn's erin burnett last night, if hospitals were ready for this. let's listen to his answer. >> well,
